Library Newsletter

UNM TAOS Library - Close at Hand
YOUR UNM-Taos Library is starting a new chapter in the next few weeks, and we’re excited to share with you the news. Our goal by the Fall semester is to have the college library open for business at the Klauer campus where we will be readily accessible to the students and faculty, and still be able to welcome community members.

We must thank Dr. Kate O’Neill, UNM-Taos’ Executive Director, and Dr. Randi Archuleta, Dean of Instruction, for having the vision and drive to find a way to get the library resources and services on the main campus at Klauer.  And thanks also to the Taos Municipal Schools for working with UNM-Taos to set-up the portables at the campus.

The students and faculty have had to travel seven miles north of the campus to access their library resources for the past few years as the Klauer campus has been built out in stages. This is a new chapter in the story of YOUR UNM-Taos Library…moving to a building close to the students…but it’s not the end of the story. We may be closer to the students but the amount of space may still not be adequate to serve all of the needs of our students, faculty and community.

The goal is still to build a learning center to accommodate a full-fledged academic library space, a learning lab for computers with software to assist students with varying learning abilities and professional staff to mentor them, plenty of quiet study space and room for group study, and a media/theatre/presentation room for coursework as well as community events. The Southwest Research Center which provides historical and genealogical materials not just for students and faculty but for writers and researchers from right down the street to across the globe, will also be housed in this new building.

Student success is the name of the game, and the UNM-Taos administrators continue to keep their eye on that goal. Having YOUR college library in the middle of the campus can clearly contribute to the success of our students by not only having easy access to the books and journals but by having the ability to work with the dedicated and trained library staff.

We will miss this historical building on Civic Plaza Drive that has housed YOUR college library for the past 17 years, with its hand-hewn vigas, adobe walls that kept the books cool in the summer and warm in the winter, and the most recent addition of George Chacón’s mural but again, student success is the name of the game.  The more success stories that come out of UNM-Taos, the better off our community will be.
