Library Newsletter - Fall Lecture Series Returns!

Members of the library staff have been spending their summer preparing for the return of the Fall Lecture Series. A few years ago the directors of UNM-Taos and SMU-in-Taos forged a relationship that continues to bear fruit in the form of a speakers series that is con- stantly expanding.

The purpose of the ten week SMU/UNM-Taos Lecture Series is to share information and ideas about the Taos area – its diverse history, culture, agriculture, arts, my thos, and terrain – with local resi- dents and visitors. Each Wednes- day evening in the fall, lectures are given by invited speakers who have in-depth knowledge and experience about one or more of these aspects of Taos. Many of the lectures are enhanced with visuals and will appeal to both young people and adults.

The goal is to have those in at- tendance gain a deeper apprecia- tion of Taos and, more broadly, to strengthen our community bonds and stimulate dialogue and reflection among faculty, students and the wider community.

Because of the positive public response to the “Harvest Festival” segment of last year‟s lecture series, the event is expanding into a real celebration. This year the lec- ture series hosts the “Harvest Reception” - just one evening in a week long Fall Harvest Festival, held at the Klauer campus, that centers around food, music, dance, performances and demonstrations.

Speaker Profiles

Following are brief bios for each of the upcoming speak- ers. Please see our website at www.taoslecture.com for more detailed descriptions.

We are excited to bring Val Landi to the series. He has a technology background that spans the birth of the Internet ranging from Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen's Interval Research, where he helped pioneer innovations for the „Wired World‟ to LookSmart, an early Google competitor and the search-directory for Microsoft MSN to CEO of Redband Broadcasting -a Sony com- pany and one of first Internet radio sites. Val is fo- cusing this phase of his life on building a new-media company devoted to space exploration and science. He will be speaking about the discovery of earth-like planets in other star systems.

Dr. Woohoo is a young innovator in the field of art and technology. He is also a collaborator with other media artists in the field of interactivity, design and programming. He will be speaking about what hap- pens when the rules of art and design are broken.

Jeremy McDonnell holds a M.F.A. degree from Ohio State University and was recently recognized as the Most Inspirational Instructor of the Year at UNM Taos. He will be sharing a personal journey through the worlds of high end modern art, and contemporary art education. Jeremy has the remarkable talent of helping his students look out into the art world to see artists and their work in new and sometimes surpris- ing ways.
