Your Future in Focus

We hope your spring semester is going well.  UNM-Taos Student Affairs and Accelerate are collaborating to bring our students a College and Career Expo: Your Future in Focus.

This event is more than a college and/or job fair.  It is an interactive educational event that will bring together UNM-Taos Programs, numerous 4-year colleges and local businesses on Tuesday April 1st from 11-2 at Bataan Hall.

Students will have the opportunity to learn how to navigate employment application and/or transfer application processes.  In addition, to learning about career opportunities with local business and agencies, we will host a panel of speakers during the lunch hour. According to a November 2013 article in Time Magazine, a recent survey found that more than 60% of employers say that job applicants lack “communication and interpersonal skills.”  We will address this issue with a panel to discuss the Importance of Soft Skills in the Workplace.

UNM-Taos BGP has an exciting and informative lineup of Spring Information Fairs. Attached is a flyer with days, times and locations of events.  Please email your class lists and announce these events to your students and staff and encourage them to attend the sessions. These are opportunities for our students and staff to take charge of their education and empower themselves with information.

• The College and Career Expo is Transfer Day on April 1 at Bataan Hall. The UNM-Taos Branch has invested a lot of time orchestrating this event with over 30 regional colleges and local employers! The future in focus is the theme!  UNM-Taos BGP will have a table at this event and we appreciate our ABQ campus departments who will be in Taos to advise for Business Administration, Liberal Arts, Interdisciplinary Film & Digital Media and much more. This is the time to get information.
• Encourage your students to Study Abroad and attend our Global Education session on April 2.
• We are delighted to host an art reception for the new paintings by faculty member Jean Elli-Sankari on April 3.
• The Program Director from Organization, Information & Learning Sciences (OI&LS) will be in Taos on April 8 to advise on a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctorate in adult learning, training development & evaluation, organization development, knowledge management, distance education, e-learning, data management and instructional technology systems.
• If you and/or your students are uncertain about online classes and the LEARN platform,  join us on April 10^th. Erin Duddy will demystify the UNM Online Course Environment. This is not to be missed.
• The College of Education will be here on April 15 and April 16 to advise students on Early Childhood & Multicultural Education and Elementary Education.

Attention, Students!

Finals are over and classes have ended at UNM-Taos, but the Klauer campus is open through Friday, December 20 and you can still come out to Pueblo Hall to enroll in person, go online at taos.unm.edu or call 737-6200 to get information on how to register for spring semester.

In addition, this year for the first time, you can register online for spring semester during the winter break! The campus will close down December 20 and not reopen until January 2nd, but if you go to taos.unm.edu and click on Loboweb, then click on spring semester, it will take you to the registration site.

If you have a bursars hold on your account or any other problem or special issue, remember that the full enrollment office staff will be back on duty to help you by phone or in person on January 2nd. The first day of class is January 21, so don’t delay... get started today!

Today the on-line bookstore opened for the spring 2014 semester!!  You can now start purchasing your books for your spring classes.  Book orders can be made on-line on our virtual bookstore hosted by MBS Direct.

4.    UNM-Taos MBS Direct Bookstore (mbsdirect.net) official opens, and click on “order your books”.

5.    Click on “pay with credit card” or “financial aid voucher”, and select “lower division or upper division”, and spring 2014 term.

6.    Select your class and click continue. Your book will show up, along with option to select “MarketPlace”, which allows students to view what other sites are selling the same book at an equal or lower price.

Taos Feeds Taos has extended its collection of non-perishable food through Wednesday of this week. We will take food and cash donations at the National Guard Armory south of town from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and if you have a large quantity, just call Linda Knief at 770-1804 and we’ll send someone to pick it up.


We’re all in this together. Helping those who are less fortunate---that’s what it’s all about, and it’s a great feeling!

Library Newsletter, November 2013

YOUR UNM-Taos Library just celebrated its one-year anniversary at its location on the Klauer campus. Although there still is not enough space to house the resources and collections the library currently owns, the special collections local community members offer the library, private study space for students, and an adequate library instruction classroom the most important accomplishment is that the library is on the campus where the students attend classes.

In the past year while providing services on the Klauer campus, YOUR library checked out 2,955 items, filled over 300 requests for information from other libraries, and 3,175 patrons signed in to use the computers. This amount does not cover the total number of library users as it’s just a sampling of those who take the time to sign in.

The percent of items checked out to community members is low and we continually strive to change that. This is a community college and therefore, this is YOUR library for students and non-students alike.

YOUR community college library is prepared to help with everything from research on drones for that class assignment to signing up for insurance in compliance with the Affordable Care Act to viewing the “None for the Road” video required to get a Driver’s License.

We also feel very strongly about helping our patrons navigate through the world of information. In the September issue of College & Research Libraries, the authors stated that “…it seems that one of the most important-and perhaps the single most important-factor in determining which resources students will use is the default way in which a particular search system ranks and returns results.” (Asher, 471) YOUR college library staff are here to help find the best resources for your information needs, and show you how to produce more relevant results through the maze of search systems.

Grab a cup of coffee at the college café and stop in to YOUR community college library to check out everything from the Children’s Corner to the Special Collections. We will be open from now through December 20th, except for the Thanksgiving holiday on November 28 & 29.

SUN ONLINE (Skill Up Network)

An online course-sharing system will provide New Mexico students greater access to courses and programs. Thirteen colleges are participating in the implementation of this online course-sharing system in New Mexico. Through SUN Online, students will have the opportunity to take classes and programs from other institutions that articulate with their programs of study, while remaining enrolled in their own home institution. 

If you are skilled at online education and are interested in taking online courses that are not available at UNM-Taos, please go to the Skill Up Network website http://skillupnetwork.org for information on online course offerings.  If there is a course that interests you, please contact an advisor at UNM-Taos (575-737-6215).

Cover Story

E-books, E-resources, online bookstores, electronic resources, E-journals, electronic databases ----Eeeeeek. We keep hearing that everything is available “online” but what does that mean?
There are so many layers, so many formats, so many portals to these electronic resources that not even a professional librarian, or an extremely savvy computer geek can stay on top of this new “E” world of information and resources. With that said, we would like to encourage you to communicate with your library staff when you are unsure how to access something, or if you want to determine if a particular title or resource might be available online.
This newsletter has always been to showcase the print subscriptions YOUR college library has so you can determine whether or not you would like to come by and check out a magazine or journal. But, as some of you know, YOUR college library also subscribes to many online resources. This is not only key because you have 24/7 access from anywhere but also, because space for print materials is at a minimum at UNM-Taos. When you look at the campus space in square footage, UNM-Taos is one of the colleges in New Mexico with the least amount of space per fulltime equivalent (FTE) student than any other college in New Mexico.
As mentioned in the “Two Tips” on this page, there is no physical bookstore so all textbooks are ordered online. This can cause some issues with getting the item in a timely fashion, having a credit card to order electronically, having a proper address for delivery but on the other hand, it empowers us to choose where we want to order from, at what price, and in what format. Nowadays, you can even “rent” the online book for the semester rather than buying it.
Most of the research databases that provide electronic access to newspaper, magazine and journal articles as well as e-books are purchased with GO Bond money that you, the taxpayers, voted for. Because of that we want to be sure everyone is familiar with what is available and how to access it. We encourage you to go to the library website at and click on “Research Databases” on the menu and just play with what comes up to get familiar with it. There are layers of online materials at your fingertips.

Shout Out! And Bake Off!

Shout Out! And Bake Off!  

CASA and the Writing Studio will host a Shout Out and Bake Off, on Wednesday, September 25th, from 11 to 2.

Bake Off Contest!  

Join our Bake Off and bring a homemade treat for judging (such as a pie, cake, or a dozen cookies). Best baked item wins a copy of Sun, Stone, and Shadows. Your recipe must accompany your dish and it needs to include why the dish is special to you so that we can share in your food culture and heritage.
Please drop off your submission before 10:30 am.
The winner will be the baker who receives the most votes. All recipes will be included in our first CASA/Writing Studio cook book compilation.

UNM-Taos Ten Year Anniversary Celebration

• As you know, 2013 marks our 10th year as a branch of the University of New Mexico. On October 4, at the Taos Country Club on county road 110, the Development Office is celebrating the occasion with a reception from 4:30 to 7:30 pm. The event is free to the public, and will feature tasty hors d’oeuvres along with live music by the Arroyo Kings. Any proceeds will go to UNM-Taos student scholarships.

Thanks to collaboration between UNM-Taos and SMU in Taos, we have enriched our community with an engaging and informative yearly lecture series. The goal of the UNM-Taos and SMU in Taos Fall Lecture Series is to have those in attendance gain a deeper appreciation of Taos – its unique history, culture, agriculture, arts, mythos and terrain- and to help strengthen our community bonds, while stimulating dialogue and reflection among faculty, students and the wider community based on the lecture topics selected for each years programming.

The fifth annual SMU in Taos/UNM-Taos Fall Lecture Series, running from September 4th through October 9th this year, is organized around the theme of Things We Consume.By forming an ongoing partnership with the Taos Community, we will be able to further a dialogue on how we can best sustain our communities and preserve the rich cultural heritage of northern New Mexico in the face of an uncertain, challenging, and even promising, future.

By forming an ongoing partnership, the two major institutions of higher education in Northern New Mexico (UNM-Taos and SMU in Taos) will further a dialogue on the nature of the consumption of Land, Water, Art, Culture, Ideas and Food. The lecture topics will include the following themes (in no particular order) over six consecutive Wednesday nights: Land and Water; Wellness and Spirituality; Cultural Narratives; Food Traditions; Popular Culture; and, Art and Its Uses.

This year’s list of speakers includes a number of local and nationally known speakers: Patricia Michaels (Project Runway), Chef Hosea Rosenberg(winner of Top Chef), Matt Pennington (Producer - ABC's Wipeout, Fear Factor, the CW's Capture); Jonathan Warm-Day Coming (Artist/Author); Estevan Arellano, (Writer, Historian, Agriculturalist); Jeremy McDonnell (Fine Arts Professor, UNM-Taos); Victor Goler (Sculptor, Conservator); Jina Brenneman(Curator, Harwood Museum); Jerry Warman (Hulse/Warman Gallery); Ron Gardner (Water Usage Expert); Shirley Trujillo(Taos Pueblo Agriculturalist); Irvin Morris (Author); Sean Murphy (Author/Meditation Instructor); Bernestine Singley(Author/Consultant); Bonnie Lee Black (Author/Chef); Ky Quintanilla (Executive Chef, Lambert’s) - among others.

Note that the Lecture Series topic for this year’s lectures are especially relevant for high school and university students because their lives will be directly influenced by the challenges of building a sustainable society and assessing the resources that we consume. Many educators will be offering extra-credit for attendance – and students who attend all lectures will be entered into a drawing for a prize.
