USFS Pathways Opportunities

The Forest Service will publish Vacancy Announcements for Pathways opportunities (what was previously the SCEP/STEP student employment/internships programs) in USAJobs from 2/25 to 3/1.   These opportunities will be open only for five days and there will be a separate announcement for each professional series.  There will be one announcement per series for all 700+ potential locations.  Please encourage students to open an account in usajobs and upload a resume.  Once the vacancies are available in USAJobs, students should apply for each professional area they would like to pursue.  In each application, students should indicate which geographic area they are available to work.  One important note is that not all geographic areas will hire for all professional series.  If students are willing to move for an internship (at their cost) they should apply to anywhere that they would be willing to go.  There is no limit to the number of locations that they can list for each internship, provided that they are genuinely interested in working there and they recognize that they will not be compensated for travel expenses to the internship location.  If you have questions regarding Pathways internships, please do not hesitate to contact me.  Also, feel free to disseminate the attached fact sheet for applicants widely.

Mental Health First Aid Course Offered at UNM-Taos

JUST ENDORSED BY PRESIDENT OBAMA IS HIS GUN CONTROL PLAN

HED 293 - MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID: OFFERED SPRING BREAK March 4 & 5 2013, 9AM - 4PM @ UNM-Taos

College campuses have become a flashpoint for awareness of the need for effective mental health support and crisis response:

* Someone you know could be experiencing a mental illness or crisis.
* You are more likely to encounter someone — student, friend, family member, coworker, neighbor, or member of the community — in an emotional or mental crisis than someone having a heart attack  .

Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based 'first responder' course that addresses risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, and trains participants in the skills, resources and knowledge to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care. Participants who successfully complete the course receive national certification in MHFA (similar to CPR certification). The course is appropriate for diverse audiences and professionals including: health and human service students; primary care, nursing, EMS, and other health professionals; faith communities; educators and student support staff; human resource professionals; law enforcement; peers; volunteers; YOU!

Take the course, save a life, strengthen your community.

Flyer attached.  WATCH FOR UPCOMING MY TURN COLUMN IN THE TAOS NEWS.

Ecuador: Bio-Cultural Diversity & Social Justice

ECUADOR!

Have you ever dreamed of visiting another country while earning college credits?  This option is closer than you think!

There will be an informational session on Friday, February 22, 2013 in TSPH 127, 10:00-11:30 a.m.

UNM Taos students have been invited to participate in the Summer 2013 Program offered through UNM Albuquerque.

Ecuador: Bio-Cultural Diversity & Social Justice

The University of New Mexico, through the Latin American and Iberian Institute, offers a new study abroad opportunity in intensive program of natural history, cultural history, and language study at UNM and the field site, Cuenca http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuenca,_Ecuador  and Quito http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quito , Ecuador. The Ecuador program offers students up to seven semester hours of credit and features a three-day orientation session at UNM, a three-week field experience, and three days of closing seminars at UNM upon return.

Based on human rights and natural rights of Pacha Mama, Mother Earth, the new constitution of Ecuador, Chapter Two, Article 395 affirms that "The State shall guarantee a sustainable model of development, one that is environmentally balanced and respectful of cultural diversity, conserves biodiversity and the natural regeneration capacity of ecosystems, and ensures meeting the needs of present and future generations."

With more than 5000 endemic species, Ecuador is one of the most mega-biodiverse nations on the planet. It is also one of the least developed countries in Latin America. Its leaders and citizens are torn between the obligations to preserve nature and provide for human needs. The curse of oil has skewed its economy and ruined vast tracts of Amazonian forests, but a fascinating and innovative "post-petroleum" era is dawning.

Ecuador lies in Chinchay Suyu, the northwest quadrant of Tahuantin Suyu, the Incan empire of the four directions. The natural and cultural histories of Ecuador are deeply intertwined and illustrate the idea that biological and cultural diversity support and sustain each other.

HOWL: we want to hear your voice!

The 2013 Spring edition of HOWL: The Voice of UNM Taos, is on the move again, and we want to hear your voice!

We are accepting submissions for the newest publication of HOWL, and we would like to see your artistic expression, whether it be in the form of poetry, a painting, prose writings, photography, or any other various forms of how you speak your mind. Our goal is to get the Taos community to share their talents so that we may feature your work(s) in the Spring pulication of HOWL, with a book release party in early May.

Our theme is synchronicity, and we want the community to show it's voice in unison, so we would appreciate it if you could add a short bio, describing yourself and and answering "what you do to synchronize with the community"All entries by you will be considered but we ask that you try and make a limit of 3 entries per submitter... If you happen to send in more than that, then it's no big deal, it is Taos after all. Please keep in mind that all entries must be submitted by the 12th of March.

You have multiple options when it comes to submitting your works, but take note that
Poetry and Prose are preferred in a Microsoft Word document, and the art works better as a pdf. file. This makes much it easier to incorporate your works into our layout.
  • Send an email to TaosHowl@gmail.com
  • Submit by way of our website, at sites.google.com/site/howlunmtaos, or better yet, just enter "UNM Taos HOWL" in your search bar
  • Bring your artwork to our photo shoot event on the 8th of March! [shoot location and time needed]

We hope to see your beautiful works be submitted to the Spring 2013 edition of HOWL: The Voice of UNM Taos. Things like this wouldn't be impossible, if not for our wonderful community, so thank you for reading this. We can't wait to hear from you!

~The HOWL Team.

(DISCLAIMER: All writings are subject to minor editing for things such as spelling, punctuation, typos, and small grammatical errors. If you wouldn't like anything to be changed, then please leave a note with your piece, describing what you would not like to be edited. We will check with you on what is acceptable.)

UNM-Taos Celebrates Ten Years

In 2013 UNM-Taos celebrates ten years of service to the citizens of northern New Mexico as a Branch Campus.  At the same time, UNM Bachelor and Graduate Programs Through Extended Learning commemorates their twenty year presence in Taos.  We are proud of our record of providing quality, inclusive, affordable education to all who seek it, because education is the open door to the American Dream. We owe this success to the hundreds of dedicated faculty, staff and department heads who have shaped our institution over the years and held it to the highest standards of scholarship and fiscal responsibility.  We honor our state and federal legislators who have supported us through good times and bad. But most of all we salute the students who, through personal sacrifice and perseverance, refuse to give up on their belief in a brighter future. Therefore, it is to the graduates of the Class of 2013 that we dedicate the next decade of excellence in education at UNM-Taos.
